THEATRICAL SPACES
"I can take any empty space and call it a bare stage. A man walks across this empty space whilst someone else is watching him, and this is all that is needed for an act of theatre to be engaged." Peter Brook
There is nothing more thrilling than the possibility that exists when we can escape into a world where everything becomes ALIVE. Where we make visible what is invisible. Where time stands still and we are invited to participate inside the life of a play where anything and everything is possible. All that's required is an empty space, two actors and words on a page.
It is the beginning of a new term and we are about to do a read of selected scenes. We will workshop these scenes over the period of our nine week school term at which point the scenes will be performed in front of a LIVE studio audience. As a director or teacher, the ultimate goal of rehearsing is to achieve a performance that is deemed worthy of presenting to an audience. While the end result is important, it is crucial not to pressure actors into focusing solely on the outcome. Instead, it is essential to provide them with the freedom to explore and play without the burden of producing a specific result. By allowing actors the freedom to play and experiment without the pressure of delivering a predetermined result, they can more easily access their creativity and authenticity. This freedom enables them to fully immerse themselves in the moment and respond organically to their scene partners. It is this organic exchange between actors that makes a scene come ALIVE!
We are celebrating with donuts, cookies and coke. . . the drinking variety not the other. Throughout the term, we have faced numerous obstacles and asked countless questions. But through it all, one thing remains clear - it is all about growth. The growth we have experienced, both individually and as a group, is truly remarkable. It is a testament to our actor's determination, enthusiasm, and passion for what we do, as you can see on these FACES! Thank you for your courage and hard work throughout the term.
Beginning in 1980 I taught acting in many, many venues all over Melbourne.
The last two venues were Richmond & Hawthorn.
RICHMOND STUDIO 1997 — 2010
My Richmond Studio became our home from 1997—2010. The Richmond venue was more than just a place for performances, it was a sanctuary for our acting students. It was a space where they could explore, experiment, and ultimately grow as actors and artists. The energy within those walls was palpable, filled with passion, dedication and a shared love for the craft of acting. It was at The Richmond venue that our signature exercises were developed. Exercises that would fundamentally change my teaching as well as my understanding of what it truly means to act. As a teacher, witnessing the transformation that took place in our students through these exercises, was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Fortunately we filmed these exercises and they are available to view on our website here:
